I’ve talked about board game design contests a few times on this blog and on my podcast. I’ve entered several over the years and judged a couple. I think it’s time to go to the next step and host a contest. I’ll be running the contest through my podcast, The Board Game Workshop. Next week’s episode will have more information about the structure and how to enter.
I’m still working out all of the details, but there are a few things I would like to include. It will have feedback on every entry. I think this is the most valuable thing most people get from a contest. Also, a multi-phase competition with time between phases. I like the idea of entrants having some time to incorporate feedback and improve their entries as they move forward. I’d like to have some of the focus be on innovation. We have more games coming out now than ever before, but only a few that really stand out for being innovative. Innovation in game design is great for the hobby because it can open up new areas for design.
Listen to The Board Game Workshop to find out how to enter. If there is anything you would like to be included in the contest, let me know.
UPDATE: Contest announcement and rules.
I’d like to see folks invent a component or use one in an unusual way.
That would certainly be an innovation.
